So I was doing a little bit of research on Topaz and wanted to learn more about it. I have become almost obsessed with looking for quality ‘imperial’ topaz but this pair is not regarding that variety!
I uncovered something really interesting regarding the origin of the name “Topaz” that I didn’t know so I thought I’d share it!
The name Topazios originates from a small island in the Red Sea, now known as Zabargad or St. John’s Island. Ancient Greeks named it Topazios because it was a source of golden-green gemstones (actually peridot, not topaz). Over time, the name “topaz” shifted to refer to the gem we know today.
Interestingly, Topazios means “to seek” in Greek, because the island was often shrouded in mist, making it hard to find. This mysterious origin adds a poetic touch to topaz, a gem that feels like it holds a little bit of the sky, sea, or even sunlight in its depths.
I can totally see this fitting for sky and swiss blue topaz (sky), London blue topaz (sea) and sunlight (imperial).
