It’s no secret that I love and adore Australian opals. But have you heard of Boulder Opal? Yes, it’s also from Australia! You might have heard of it but aren’t quite sure what it is. Let me share some fascinating facts about Boulder Opal so you can learn more and fall in love with this unique gemstone just as I have!

Boulder Opal is primarily found in Queensland, Australia. There are other types of boulder opal found in New South Wales, Mexico, and Honduras, but for the purpose of this article I am only talking about the stone from Queensland. 

Unique Formation:

Boulder opal forms within ironstone or sandstone, creating stunning patterns and colors. Unlike other opals, it appears as thin layers or veins within the host rock, which gives it a distinct and natural look.

Symbol of Hope and Creativity:

Opal is seen as a symbol of hope, inspiration, and creativity. Who would want to wear this and have it serve as a reminder for you in your life.

Bad luck:

Have you ever heard it's back luck to wear opal if it's not your birthstone, or to purchase opal jewelry for yourself? Lucky for you we don't believe in that here! Opal has actually been considered lucky throughout most of human history from Ancient Rome to the Middle Ages. 

I'd say it's even luckier to own an opal because each one is distinctly unique - no two are ever the same!
